About our
Plastic Barrel Products

All of our plastic barrel products are made from re-cycled food grade barrels. These plastic barrels
come into this country from Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy and India, and have
traveled many thousands of miles.  Even though we have thoroughly cleaned them inside
and out, and applied several coats of a UV polish, they may still have
some small scratches and scrapes. This should be considered as part
of the "character" of the recycled barrels.

Our plastic barrels have a screw on top with one inch holes, screen mesh to keep out debris and
mosquitoes, three top overflow male hose connections with caps, a nylon spigot,
and a bottom drain plug. The overflow fittings allow excess water to be diverted
into a second barrel (or third, or fourth etc.), or by attaching hoses, excess water
can be diverted to remote areas such as a garden or flower beds. A rain water diverter
can also be attached to one of these overflow connections.

The nylon spigot is shipped inside the barrel and will need to be screwed onto the
pre-installed plastic fitting by the customer. The nylon spigot can be interchanged
with the bottom drain plug if desired.

About our
White Oak Barrel
 Products
Our White Oak Barrels are made from used whiskey and wine barrels.
These barrels gives your gardening and water catching needs that old-time
rustic look and feel.  They are made from real white oak, and the bands are
iron.  The barrels are also great eye catchers and conversation pieces, as well
as completely functional for just about anything you would need, and are available
in other miscellaneous products, such as trash collection barrels, party barrels,
and can even be used as planters for the decorative flower gardens to put in your lawn.

The White Oak barrels are designed to be used outdoors, with three overflow connections,
a brass spigot, and a drain plug, and can also be linked together up to 3 barrels per barrel.
The barrels are closed system barrles with a 2" by 3" hole cut in the lid, and the overflows are
designed to fit any standard garden hose to make it easier to redirect the overflow
to where it needs to go.  Each barrel has a 53 gallon capacity.

Rain Barrel Basics

A rain barrel collects the water that runs off your roof through a downspout and stores it for your garden, lawn and outdoor chores. Each inch of rain falling on 1,000 square feet of roof produces about 623 gallons of runoff, so even one barrel fills quickly during a summer storm. Using that soft, chlorine-free water on your plants lowers your water bill and reduces runoff into storm drains.

How to Set Up a Rain Barrel

  • Pick a downspout near the garden you plan to water.
  • Raise the barrel on a sturdy, level base. Raising it gives more water pressure at the spigot and room to fill a watering can. A full 55-gallon barrel weighs more than 450 pounds, so the base must be solid.
  • Connect the downspout with a diverter or by shortening the downspout over the lid screen.
  • Direct the overflow away from your foundation, or link a second barrel to catch the extra water.

Our rain barrel installation instructions walk through the spigot, elbow and overflow fittings step by step.

Care and Seasonal Tips

Keep a fine screen on the lid to keep out mosquitoes, leaves and debris, and use the water regularly so it does not sit for long. Before the first hard freeze, drain the barrel, disconnect it and reconnect the downspout so freezing water cannot damage the barrel or fittings. Rain barrel water is great for plants but is not meant for drinking. A few states and local governments have rules about collecting rainwater, so check with your local water authority if you are unsure.

Grow more with less water by pairing your rain barrel with our container gardening products and patio barrel gardens. Need barrels in bulk? See wholesale barrels. Prices on this page come from our last catalog update; call toll free to confirm current pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much water can a rain barrel collect?

About 623 gallons fall on every 1,000 square feet of roof for each inch of rain. A single downspout usually drains only part of the roof, but it can still fill a 55- or 60-gallon barrel in one moderate rain.

How do I keep mosquitoes out of my rain barrel?

Keep a fine mesh screen over the inlet and lid, make sure the lid fits tightly, and use the water regularly so it does not stand for long periods.

What should I do with my rain barrel in winter?

Drain it before the first hard freeze, disconnect it from the downspout and store it upside down or indoors, then reconnect your downspout so roof water drains away from the house.
