******   Because greenhouse gardening is so addictive and enjoyable,  the most frequent mistake people make when buying a hobby greenhouse is buying one that is TOO SMALL.  Once you have purchased your greenhouse from a company and realize it is too small,  it is usually too late to do anything about it.   NOT SO  with Cedar Tree Gardens.  All of our "Chalet" model  greenhouses are of modular design and are easily expandable by simply ordering another section,  detaching the back wall,  adding that section, and re-attaching the back wall.  A process that usually takes less than an hour    *******

How to Choose a Greenhouse Kit

Pick the right spot

Most greenhouses grow best with full sun. In northern areas, setting the long side of the greenhouse facing south helps capture low winter sun. Choose a level spot with good drainage, and think about how you will get water and, if needed, electricity to the greenhouse.

Choose a size you will grow into

Many gardeners wish they had bought a larger greenhouse once they start growing. Plan for benches, walking space and taller plants, and leave room around the outside for maintenance.

Glazing that holds heat

Our cedar greenhouses use twinwall polycarbonate, which insulates better than single-pane glass, diffuses light to reduce scorching and resists breakage from hail and impact.

Foundation, ventilation and heat

A level, solid foundation keeps the frame square and the doors working smoothly. Roof vents and a door at each end let hot air escape on sunny days, while a small heater lets you grow through the winter. For starting seeds and hardening off transplants, a cedar cold frame with solar vents is an easy, low-cost option.

Why Cedar?

Western red cedar is naturally resistant to rot and insects, looks beautiful in the garden and does not need chemical treatment. It also stays cooler to the touch than metal frames and is easy to work with if you want to add shelves or hooks.

Greenhouse prices and shipping depend on the size and options you choose. Call toll free at 1-877-888-5609 to confirm current pricing and lead times. While you plan your garden, take a look at our rain barrels and container gardening products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit for a greenhouse?

It depends on where you live and the size of the greenhouse. Many towns treat a greenhouse like a shed, so check your local zoning office and any homeowners association rules before you build.

Is polycarbonate better than glass for a greenhouse?

Twinwall polycarbonate insulates better than single-pane glass, spreads light more evenly and is far more impact resistant. Glass offers the clearest view and the longest life but is heavier and breaks more easily.

Can I use my greenhouse in winter?

Yes. Twinwall panels hold heat well, and with a small heater and good sealing many gardeners grow cool-season crops and overwinter plants in their greenhouse.
