Choosing an Outdoor Fireplace or Fire Pit

An outdoor fireplace or fire pit turns a patio or deck into a place to gather on cool evenings. The right choice depends on the fuel you want to use, the look you like and the space you have. Here is how the models on this page compare.

Outdoor gas fireplaces

The Monessen Al Fresco and the Napoleon outdoor stainless steel fireplace are designed for outdoor use and give you a real fireplace look at the flip of a valve. The Al Fresco models are rated from about 42,600 to 60,000 BTU.

Gas fire pits and campfires

Gas campfires like the Heatilator Patio CampFire (with Mesa or Rock Ring bases), the Peterson Real-Fyre Outdoor Campfyre, Campfyre in stucco or tile, Napoleon PatioFlame and Kingsman fire pits give you an open campfire without smoke, sparks or ashes.

Wood-burning patio fireplaces and fire pits

If you love the crackle of real wood, look at the Embergard and Embergard Junior patio fireplaces, the Savannah, and the Good Directions fire pits and fire domes. The Empire gas chimenea gives you the classic chimenea shape with gas convenience.

Natural Gas or Propane?

Natural gas models connect to a permanent gas line, so you never run out of fuel, but a qualified gas technician must run the line. Propane models can use a portable tank and can be placed almost anywhere on your patio. Many outdoor gas products are built for one fuel and need a conversion kit for the other, so check the model before you order.

Placement and Safety

Follow the manufacturer’s clearances to walls, railings, overhead structures and anything combustible. Outdoor fireplaces and fire pits are made for open-air use only; never use them indoors, in a garage or on an enclosed porch. For wood-burning models, check your local burn rules and homeowners association guidelines, keep a spark screen in place and never leave a fire unattended. A weatherproof cover helps protect any outdoor fireplace between uses.

How Much Fire Do You Need?

For a small patio where two to four people gather, a compact fire pit or burner like the PatioFlame is usually enough. Larger decks, outdoor rooms and entertaining spaces benefit from a full outdoor fireplace or a bigger campfire with higher BTU output. Wind and open space carry heat away quickly, so if you want real warmth rather than ambiance, choose a model with more output and place seating within a few feet of the fire, following the manufacturer’s clearances.

Caring for Your Outdoor Fireplace

Keep burner ports and media such as logs, lava rock or glass free of leaves and debris, and check gas connections for leaks at the start of each season using soapy water, never a flame. Cover gas units when not in use to keep out rain and insects, and store propane tanks upright outdoors. For wood-burning models, remove cold ashes regularly so moisture does not corrode the steel, and touch up high-heat paint as needed to prevent rust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an outdoor fireplace on a covered patio?

It depends on the model. Each manufacturer lists minimum clearances to ceilings and overhead structures; follow those clearances exactly, and never use an outdoor unit in an enclosed space.

How much heat does an outdoor gas fireplace give off?

Output varies by model. Larger outdoor fireplaces such as the Monessen Al Fresco are rated from about 42,600 to 60,000 BTU, while smaller fire pits produce less heat and are designed more for ambiance.

Is a gas fire pit or a wood fire pit better?

Gas fire pits light instantly and produce no smoke, sparks or ashes. Wood fire pits give real crackle and aroma and cost less to buy, but need a supply of dry firewood and closer supervision.
